TechEd 2006 - Pre Conference Mid-Day

Well, lunchtime at the Microsoft corral. The pre-conference seminar I went to was by Mark Russinovich entitled, Fighting Malware with Advanced Detection and Removal.

Mark mentioned some interesting facts from his presentation
- Best Buy's "GeekSquad" has been reported that 90% of their calls are related to Malware problems on customer's PC's.
- In the 2nd half of 2005, almost ~11,000 new viruses/worms were identified (not to mention the variants identified for already know viruses).
- Spyware is the cause of 2 of every 5 home user and 1 out of every 4 corporate customer service calls.
- 80% of malware created in 2H05 threatens confidential information

Eric,

Did you think the preconference was worth it?

Hunter,

Yes, I think it was. Mark's session was a bit technical at first but then it all tied in at the end. It's a rough way to get content since it's an all day session. It'll definately help me train others on malware detection and remediation techniques. Virus Protection/Anti-Spam is getting better and pretty much gets rid of/blocks most items. But, there will be the day when an executive needs the data and the machine can't be rebuilt so this knowledge is good to know. I also didn't realize that Alcohol 120% was considered a rootkit. Time to uninstall it.
